Board Member Alex Villicana, who has also served on the Board of Directors of the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance since 2008, and the California Wine Institute Board of Directors since 2011, began his career in wine in 1990 when he moved to Paso Robles to work at Creston Vineyards. He immediately fell in love with winemaking and enrolled in oenology and viticulture courses through UC Davis’ Extension Program. In 1993, he purchased Cabernet Sauvignon fruit to make his first vintage, and in 1996, Alex and his wife Monica purchased 72 acres on the west side of Paso Robles to grow their own grapes. They opened a small winery and tasting room in the Adelaida Hills in 2002, and most recently have ventured into the craft distilling business by capturing their saignée (the juice removed before fermentation to improve wine quality which is usually discarded) and distilling it three times into top-shelf Vodka and Gin under the name Re:Fined.
Board Member Steven J. McAllen, MD graduated in 1986 from UC San Diego School of Medicine. He served his Internal Medicine Residency at UC Irvine Medical Center before becoming Chief Resident at Long Beach Veterans Hospital and, finally, earning Board Certification in 1989. Since 1990, McAllen has been in Private Practice in Templeton as well as an Active Staff member at Twin Cities Community Hospital In addition to being on the hospital’s board; he is a Medical Advisory Board Member for the Cancer Support Community, Paso Robles and the Director of the North County Diabetes and Nutrition Education Center. McAllen also serves as the Director of Wine Country Runs, an event in its 17th year of raising funds for youth-related non-profit organizations. Married for over 24 years, he has four children and enjoys mountain climbing, scuba diving, running, traveling and mountain biking. McAllen notes, “I derive great satisfaction from working with the nurses and ancillary staff at the hospital and caring for the citizens of Northern San Luis Obispo County.”
Lisa wished “fair winds and following seas” to the hospital board’s two departing governing board members, outgoing Vice-Chairman Dr. Kevin Colton and outgoing Chairman Justin Baldwin. “Both gentlemen served the board and the hospital extremely well in their six-year terms, and have been instrumental in executing many positive changes and successes,” Lisa noted.
